I paint glowing, atmospheric landscapes in oils and watercolors to give shape to the invisible forces of life. The drama of light, mist, and a range of natural forms are my starting point. These forms, and their movement, suggest something powerful and enigmatic, peaceful and permanent, beautiful and unknowable that underlies and animates all that lives.
My goal is to explore this "something" that is always changing and always present. I like to suggest this through a refinement of pictorial details and with controlled intensity of light and depth of color. Working slowly I apply multiple layers of paint made translucent with the use of wax, allowing new depths and tones to develop in surprising ways.
Katherine was born in West Virginia, moving later to Ohio and New Jersey, and growing up mainly in Massachusetts. She attended Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a BFA in Film, Video and Animation. She co-founded Available Light Ltd., a visual effects company and worked as a motion picture visual effects designer, animator and producer, eventually turning entirely to painting. She has painted en plein air, traveling to exotic locations including Africa, Greece, and California's coastlines and mountains.
Katherine's work has been shown in numerous solo and group shows, in galleries and museums, locally and across the country. Her work is included in corporate as well as numerous private collections. She is a member of TAG Gallery and is affiliated with the California Art Club, and Coach Art.
