Statement

I enjoy the process of framing images with the camera and then reconstructing the abstract shapes into repeat patterns.

Characteristics within the photographic process and the imposed grid become part of the composition, creating a tension between the natural world and the technology used to record it.

Architectural structures, objects, and even people transform into interesting colors, shapes and textures on the transparent surface that interacts with light when hung with pins slightly off the wall.

For me, stitches are a natural female language. The hand-stitching and piecing adds another dimension to the smooth shiny surface of the plastic, which is my way of connecting the images to create a mysterious, colorful, transparent quilt.

Bio

Gwen M. Samuels moved from the east coast to the west in 2001 and began doing her art full time. Since then she has exhibited locally and nationally and was recently juried into Los Angeles Art Association.

Gwen's work combines digital photography and hand-stitching to create interesting compositions that change when viewed close and far away. She has an interest in non-traditional materials incorporating the discarded, mended and handmade.

Gwen is a member of Surface Design, SCWCA (past co-chair of the exhibition committee), National Museum of Women in the Arts, and has a studio at the Santa Monica Art Studios at the Santa Monica Airport.
