"To experiment is at first more valuable than to produce; free play in the beginning develops courage." Josef Albers
The concepts for my textile and mixed media art works often begin with nature walks, my poetry, a spiritual experience, an exploration of materials, my life story or an observation of other people's stories.
Each fiber work is its own journey. I use many different materials to create mixed media collage pieces. People give me pieces of their past in fabrics, vintage buttons and laces so each art work represents community. There are layers revealing destruction, change and beginnings. Thread is drawn free-form like paint on canvas. Drawing and painting with markers, inks and paints brings immediacy and freshness to the work. Additional layers of embellishment and hand embroidery add texture and dimension.
When people bring their own interpretations to my art work, I say, "yes!" The universal aspect of the work strikes a chord with the viewer.
Cindy Rinne has created fine art for over 25 years. She started creating stitched pieces ten years ago. She draws with thread, paints, stamps, burns or bleaches fabric. Cindy's work emphasizes using fiber as collage with embellishment. She enjoys using vintage laces, buttons, Japanese fabrics among other textures.
Cindy has exhibited nationally. She's had solo shows at the Wignall Museum/Gallery at Chaffey College and at New Pieces in Berkeley. Cindy's works have been featured in the San Bernardino Sun, Los Angeles Times and in Art/Quilt Magazine. She was a guest speaker at the University of Redlands and will have a two-person show there in winter 2008. Recently Cindy exhibited in "Material Girls" at the Riverside Art Museum which included a catalog.
