My work consists of both figurative and abstract paintings. I paint what I feel. The viewer does not have to feel as I do. What matters to me is that they experience an emotional reaction to the images I create, whether it be pleasure, laughter or a knowing connectedness.
In the figurative paintings, I use my always handy camera as an resource for documenting the ever-changing current and vintage images in our culture. I try to capture my subjects in an instant to ensure that this moment will become timeless. These "clip shots" contain the strong threads of satire, humor, nostalgia and personal isolation which run through my work.
The initial images are processed through my own creative filter. I use skillful painterly techniques and insights into my subjects' psychology to produce visual narratives which grow out of my fascination with movies, theater and personal/documentary photography.
The two figurative paintings shown on this page are from The Divas series. All of the women in this series have one characteristic in common—attitude. Displaying a fierce boldness with an undercurrent of intrigue that often turns introspective, they cannot be overlooked or ignored. The Divas are in the viewer's face and must be confronted by them. Once seen, these women and their feminine mystique are hard to forget.
My abstract work is represented by the last two paintings. These images are made by combining acrylic under painting with oil bars. They are gestural and intuitive exercises which allow me the creative freedom to experiment. Making these works keeps my mind open to new ideas.
