My artwork is currently evolving in two directions—collages and mixed media box assemblages.
The collages start with photographs, which are then extended with watercolor. This blurs the boundaries between photography and painting as well as reality and imagination. The Jesus Series is inspired by wayside chapels, dotted across the Austrian countryside, which are mini-prayer stations for hikers and motorists. These architectural landscapes merge different cities and locales to create new environments.
The boxes attempt to capture the same seamlessness by functioning as glass-fronted windows that capture a moment in time. Their three walls dictate their size, shape and expansion. While they have fixed measurements, another dimension is added to push their boundaries since each box also has an element of movement.
Representations of entrapment, voyeurism and spectacle are built into working with boxes. Each piece provides a glimpse into the colorful inner-workings of a system, large or small, narrative or nonsensical. These assemblages reveal miniature moments in peoples' lives and invite individual viewers to project their personal interpretations onto what they see.
Dwora Fried is a collage and assemblage artist. She was born in Vienna, Austria and lived there until moving to Israel to go to college. There she received her BA from Tel Aviv University and studied at the Avni School of Fine Arts. In 1978, she moved to Los Angeles, California and became an American citizen. Her international experience is very evident in the way she combines different elements and locations in her art. Fried has exhibited primarily in California.
