My inspiration comes from the masters of Japanese woodblock prints. I am especially instructed by the work of Taiso Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), whose use of line in conjunction with sumptuous color conveys a sense of immediacy, movement, and vibrant emotionalism.
In my drawings and paintings, I apply traditional and contemporary media using unconventional techniques. These techniques, together with an emphasis on line and color, combine to challenge any notion that the two-dimensional image is necessarily static in the viewer's mind.
My work reflects my conviction that all things-whether real or imagined, natural or manufactured-are interrelated and, at some level, have a connected sensibility. My subjects are usually abstracted from my own imagination or from a visual experience that elicited an immediate emotional response. My intention is that the viewer becomes aware of or even shares my reactions and feelings of connectedness and also has an emotional experience of their own.
