BUILDING BRIDGES/TEARING DOWN WALLS:
A Search for Equity in Southern California Arts Institutions, 1987-1996

The Equity in the Arts Committee is in the final stages of researching and writing a report on the representation of women and artists of color in Southern California nonprofit visual arts institutions. The study includes questionnaire responses on equity policies and practices from thirty-three art museums and selected community galleries. Exhibition histories and staff profiles will be analyzed in relation to the stated goals of the institutions.

The report will also include an historical context chapter with insightful quotes from local visual artists, arts activists, and art historians from primary racial and ethnic groups describing their struggle for inclusion in the Southern California art world.

Projected publication date: February 2008
