The SCWCA Equity in the Arts Committee actively works to
change the status of women artists by combating sexist and racist practices
in arts organizations, academic institutions, and the media. The goal is
to ensure that the artistic vision of women and people of color are accepted
and valued in the contemporary art world on their own terms. We not only
encourage inclusion, but support accurate representation and interpretation.
We achieve our mission through the following actions:
- Monitoring the exhibition histories and equity policies of local visual arts institutions
- Sending letters of appreciation to museums and community galleries that mount exhibitions of the work of women and people of color
- Contributing articles and equity statistics to the SC/WCA newsletter regarding the status of all women in the arts
- Collecting information on equity policies and practices, staff profiles, and exhibition histories of selected Southern California nonprofit visual arts institutions (see information on the upcoming report Building Bridges/Tearing Down Walls: A Search for Equity in Southern California Arts Institutions, 1987-1996)
- Educating our membership about current political events related to the arts
- Researching collecting trends for women artists
