2000 - The Secret Lives of Women in the Arts: Creating Alternatives and Working the System

The most recent symposium was held at U.S.C., on October 21, 2000. Speakers included: Rachel Rosenthal, Kim Abeles, Samella Lewis, Josine Ianco Starrels, Linda Vallejo, Suzanne Muchnic, Patricia Correia and others. More.

1996 - Beyond the Backlash: Feminism in the 1990s

The most recent annual conference was held at UCLA at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center on June 8, 1996, in conjunction with the exhibition Sexual Politics: Judy Chicago's The Dinner Party in Feminist Art History. A morning panel on Feminist Positions and Strategies moderated by Betty Brown presented and examined the diversity of options in feminist theory and practice. In the afternoon, the dialogue revolved around Excellence and Equity: A Discussion of How Arts Institutions Can Be More Responsive to the Growing Diversity of Their Audiences, a panel moderated by Ann Isolde.

1992 - Redefining Power on Our Own Terms

The third annual conference took place on October 10, 1992 at Cal Poly Pomona. Panelists discussed racism and sexism, asserting that we must challenge views that limit the access of women and people of color in art, politics, law, health, and education. We were encouraged to create our own models for growth and change if the existing systems do not support us.

1991 - Forbidden Language: Beauty and Culture

The second annual conference was held at USC on October 4-5, 1991. Participants explored beauty as a culturally shaped ideal, empty of any precise meaning. They shared experiences and diverse cultural perspectives that expanded the notions of identity, quality, the body, and what is appreciated as beautiful.

1990 - Finding a Common Ground

SCWCA held its first annual conference at UCLA on October 20-21, 1990. Panelists focused on issues of feminism and cultural diversity in the arts. They stressed the importance of broadening our base by supporting multiple points of view in the organization and in the arts community at large.
