"Living a very visual life has taught me that it is the most exciting approach to figuring things out."

This is a special opportunity to meet KAREN CARSON, one of the artists who will be included in Multiple Vantage Points: Southern California Women Artists, 1980–2006, scheduled to be on view at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery from February 25–April 15, 2007. The large sculptural painting below titled "Recoil and Advance" (97 ¼ x 156 x 5 in.) will be included in the show. Los Angeles painter Carson uses complex spatial compositions and wide-ranging pop cultural references to fashion a vivid imaginative world.

This artist studio visit will provide you with a behind-the-scenes experience of her richly creative life. You will see objects from other cultures and images by other artists that inspire her. She'll talk with you about her past work and give you a sneak preview of some wind landscapes with flying horses she is preparing for an exhibition at Rosamund Felsen Gallery in April 2007. Whether using symbols, caricature or even illusionistic space, her works hook viewers into an urgent engagement with the world at large. You will come to understand what she means when she says, "Art is the most profound reminder of what it means to be alive."

Directions from the Santa Monica Freeway (10) west: Exit at Cloverfield Boulevard and turn left. Drive south to Ocean Park Boulevard and turn right. At the first stoplight turn left onto 23rd Street, which eventually turns into Walgrove Avenue. You will cross Rose Avenue and Morningside Way. The next street is Appleton Way (across from the Walgrove Elementary School). Turn right onto Appleton Way. Karen Caron’s studio is half a block down on the left. It’s a big square beige stucco building with a lavender gray garage door. Street parking is available.
