You won’t want to miss this guided docent tour of the Los Angeles estate of Frederick R. Weisman purchased in 1982 to serve as a showcase for his personal collection of 20th-century art. He and his wife Billie Milam Weisman, an art conservator and curator, worked together to create a unique environment located within a Mediterranean-style villa. The villa was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann in the late 1920s and exhibits the craftsmanship characteristic of that period, including hand-panted ceilings, stucco details, and wood-inlaid floors. In 1991, the Weismans added a contemporary annex, designed by Franklin Israel, to accommodate larger-scale works. Today the Foundation consists of the estate, annex, and surrounding gardens made accessible to the public by appointment only on guided tours. The collection includes works by European Modernists such as Cézanne, Picasso, and Kandinsky and Surrealists Ernst, Miró, and Magritte. The holdings in postwar art feature works by Giacometti, Noguchi, Calder, Rauschenberg, and Johns. There are also examples of Abstract Expressionist, Color-Field, and Pop Art paintings as well as contemporary California works. Directions from the San Diego Freeway (405): Exit at Sunset Boulevard and turn left to go towards UCLA. Pass Hilgard Avenue, Beverly Glen Boulevard, Delfern, and Baroda. Soon after Baroda, turn left onto N. Carolwood Drive and continue north to the carpool rendezvous location. Copyright for both images David Moore 2001. Images courtesy of the Frederick R.
