Artist Statement

Making art connects me more intensely to life. My current Stepping In series of paintings explores opposition. The yin and yang of life—night and day, birth and death, order and chaos—represent the unending contrasts in the natural world.

Frequently, I use symmetry as a way to bring order, structure and balance to my work. On a separate plane, chaotic elements create disorderly swirls of interest and tension. This tension between stasis and kinesis creates a balancing act that fascinates me.

Using mixed media on canvas, I strive to create a visceral experience by combining paint and found materials to build rich surface textures. Floating dart shapes pull the eye towards center to help create energy and movement.

Bio

Betty Green is a painter and Primetime Emmy Award winning designer living and working in Santa Monica, California. After initial studies at Cornell University, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from UCLA.

Green’s paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout California. Her work has been favorably reviewed in publications such as ArtScene, The Beverly Hills Courier, The Jewish Journal and Angeles Magazine. She has also worked as a designer in the motion picture and television industry and is the winner of an Emmy Award for graphics and main title design.

Her contributions to the arts also include the development of an after-school Art Enrichment Program for at-risk youth, serving low-income families in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles. She was awarded “The Certificate of Tribute, City of L.A., Accomplishments in the Arts” for her work with these children.
