2025 began with a bang but ended well. On January 7th at 10 am, a neighbor called about the fire in the Palisades Highland and evacuation texts soon followed. I quickly gathered my cat, a few items including several paintings thinking I was gone for the weekend. I left most of the art including the Giorgio de Chiricos bronze sculpture. Every material thing that I had cherished was gone from my home and garden, my sanctuary of 15 years. Given the impermanence of life, I felt grateful for a privileged life with my collection of fine art, antiques and carefully curated furniture.
I moved in with my son Robert and his wife Espi as I became a hands-on grandmother chasing their little ones. Each day, I painted to keep afloat — the process was the reward. I also finished preparing my “Metal. Music, SPK” memoir for publication. It tells of my childhood in Australia and youthful years on the road with my husband Graeme and our industrial “S.P.K” band. We started out on the dole in London and ended up in Hollywood. After the inevitable divorce, I threw myself into the “Doppelgänger” photo project where I portrayed all characters in the Rodney King photo from the 1991 LA riots. Then and now, art in all it’s forms has always come to my rescue whether through the plastic arts, words, performance, Butoh dance or vocals.
